What is a katana?

Vad är en katana?

The katana is a Japanese sword with an iconic, slightly curved blade, single edge, and two-handed grip. Rooted in Japan's samurai tradition, it is as much a weapon as it is a work of art. Unlike Western swords, which are often razor-sharp and heavy, the katana is balanced for fast, precise cuts.

The katana began to develop in the late Heian period (794-1185) and became the main weapon of the samurai during the Edo period (1603-1868). Its curved shape made it easier to draw and slash in a single, fluid motion, which was crucial in battle.

But the katana is more than just a weapon. It carries deep symbolism: it represents discipline, honor, and craftsmanship. A traditionally forged katana could take weeks or months to make and was often a family heirloom. Each blade is unique, with its own hamon (hardness line), weight, and balance point.

Today, katanas are not used in combat, but they remain popular in martial arts (such as iaido and kendo), as collectibles, and as decorative items. Many appreciate them as an artistic expression of Japanese history and tradition.
